Apple gets green light to test self-driving cars

By no means does this confirm an "Apple Car", in fact the permit granted to Apple covers the use of Lexus RX450h vehicles.

This comes with the news that Apple has been granted permission by California's Department of Motor Vehicles to test self-driving cars on the streets of California.

The permit allows Apple to test drive three different vehicles with six different "drivers" sitting behind the wheel.

The DMV has granted dozens of companies the rights to operate self-driving cars in California.

More information about the company's testing will come with its first report to the California DMV, which requires companies like Uber's Otto and Google's Waymo to report their disengagement rates.

But wait. Didn't Apple scrap its Project Titan (the one it never acknowledged until it said it was not going to make any self-driving cars) and start focusing only on the software part of autonomous driving technology? "At the time, it was seen as the strongest hint that Apple was still committed to self-driving technology". The news of Apple's DMV permit ultimately doesn't do much to settle the argument. Then in December, Apple submitted the following statement to the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration: "The company is investing heavily in the study of machine learning and automation, and is excited about the potential of automated systems in many areas, including transportation".

Apple's competitors have already been testing autonomous vehicles.

Traditional automakers like General Motors Co and Ford Motor Co view the self-driving auto as a natural extension of their businesses. The company is said to have hundreds of people working on "Project Titan", but progress on the project has reportedly been slowed by multiple departures of key people and debate over the best way forward for the nascent technology.
