  • Apple receives permit to test self-driving cars on California roads

Word came out on Friday that the technology giant has received regulatory permission to test self-driving vehicles in California. It also covers six human operators who must sit behind the wheel to monitor the driving and take over when needed, according to the DMV. "Apple could bring innovation to either cars being retrofitted with the self-driving technology, or to new ones designed from scratch". The permit that was granted allows Apple to perform self-driving vehicle testing operations in 3 different vehicles, with 6 different drivers.

"Even if they have a permit to test, it is most likely related to iOS, navigation, cameras, and sensors used in some type of autonomous vehicle", says Creative Strategies president Tim Bajarin.

The permit does not necessarily mean Apple is building a auto. But sometimes Apple can't control everything.

"We are always looking at new things, and the vehicle space in general is an area that it's clear that there are a lot of technologies that will either become available or will be able to revolutionize the auto experience", Apple chief executive officer Tim Cook told investors in October a year ago. "We'll know more about Apple's secretive efforts after the company files its first report". "Apple is now focused on developing the core technologies needed to power a self-driving vehicle", he says.

My personal guess would be that Apple is working towards the development of complete self-driving vehicle tech + vehicle operating systems - in other words, towards development of Apple-branded self-driving vehicle operating systems and hardware.

Late past year, Apple revealed it is investing heavily in autonomous vehicles in a letter asking the government to make it easier to develop self-driving cars. Apple's Project Titan, at one point was believed to have over 1000 employees that were working on it.
