British lawmakers set to approve PM May's June 8 election plan

"There won't be an early election", she vowed a week after the Brexit vote.

The motion passed with 522 members of parliament in favour and 13 against.

It paves the way for a ballot that could radically change the electoral map less than two years after the United Kingdom last went to the polls.

Munro said: "There is a proven track record over two elections and two referendums that debates reach huge audiences including a lot of young people who don't watch conventional political coverage in great numbers".

In a statement, it said it regretted that local parties in England would not be able to select candidates as normal but it would be "simply impossible to hold trigger ballots, selection hustings and meetings in the 631 Parliamentary constituencies" before the 11 May deadline for nominations.

Liberal Democrat leader Tim Farron has accused Mrs May of "bottling" and said broadcasters had a "moral duty" to go ahead with the showdowns even if she fails to take part.

May, who was appointed prime minister after the country voted in favour of Brexit in June past year, enjoys a large lead in the opinion polls, with 50 percent saying she would be the best prime minister.

The Daily Express says an early election will bring Westminster in step with the electorate, says rescuing May from the indignity of "commanding a tiny majority among MPs despite having enormous support among members of the public".

Three weekend opinion polls put the Conservatives about 20 points ahead of Labour, and if translated into votes, this could give May an "election landslide" with a majority of more than 100, according to an analysis by The Times.

Meanwhile, Labour's ruling National Executive Committee has confirmed that existing MPs who wish to stand again will be automatically selected and that any unsuccessful candidates from 2015 will be asked to put themselves forward.

Elections took place in May 2015 and were not expected until May 2020.

Eligible voters must make sure they are registered before 22 May in order to have their say.

The early election is the latest twist a turbulent year in British politics, which was plunged into turmoil when the country unexpectedly voted to leave the European Union last year.

A Number 10 source has told the BBC that the prime minister will not be changing her position, despite ITV's announcement.

"Make no mistake, if the SNP wins this election in Scotland - and the Tories don't - then Theresa May's attempt to block our mandate to hold another referendum when the time is right, will crumble to dust", SNP leader and Scottish First Minister Nicola Sturgeon said.

She said on Tuesday she had "reluctantly" come to the decision to call for an early election because of political division in Westminster, criticising opposition parties for trying to thwart her plans for leaving the EU. "The country is coming together, but Westminster is not".

"We believe there was a relationship between that and the audience the debates pulled in".

Previously, May was against snap elections and vowed to not have one. May has been insisting until days ago that she had no intention of calling an early election. "Our response to the Government's Industrial Strategy, which we submitted yesterday, highlights how our country can benefit from this transition in a global market now worth hundreds of billions of dollars every year". That has many asking, "What are snap elections?".
