China 'seriously concerned' over North Korea missile warnings

After decades of failure to stop North Korea's march toward a nuclear arsenal, some see Trump's bluster as a shrewd attempt to press China, the North's most important ally and trading partner, into pressuring North Korea more aggressively over its nuclear program.

US Vice President Mike Pence has threatened North Korea with an "overwhelming" response to any use of conventional or nuclear weapons.

Trump has said he's willing to make trade and economic concessions to China in return for its help with North Korea.

"We will work with you toward that end as we reform Korus in the days ahead", Pence said.

Vice President Mike Pence acknowledged Wednesday that some of the Trump administration's promises have not yet come to fruition, but he is confident that efforts to repeal and replace the Affordable Care Act will be fruitful.

"While all options are on the table", Pence said, "President Trump is determined to work closely with Japan, with South Korea, with all our allies in the region, and with China" to resolve the problem.

Pence arrived in Tokyo on Tuesday from South Korea and reassured Japan of US commitment to reining in North Korea's nuclear and missile ambitions in a series of meetings with Japanese leaders, including Prime Minister Shinzo Abe.

He also said, "We are with you 100 percent", adding that the USA always seeks peace.

As they sat down for talks, Mr Pence told Mr Aso: "When President Trump agreed to this dialogue, he envisioned this as a mechanism for enhancing bilateral commercial relations between the United States and Japan, and achieving results in the near future".

After talks with Japan's deputy prime minister, Taro Aso, Pence said the USA would work with Japan, China and other nations to get Pyongyang to give up its atomic weapons program.

Mattis struck an even tougher tone on North Korea in an interview with reporters traveling with him to Saudi Arabia. The term "reckless" is one the North Koreans have used to describe ongoing large-scale USA and South Korean military exercises, which the North calls a dress rehearsal for an invasion.

Earlier in Seoul, Mr Pence said at an American Chamber of Commerce meeting that Washington will review and reform a five-year-old trade deal with South Korea to narrow its trade deficit.

US Defence Secretary James "Mad Dog" Mattis has been briefed on the plan to shoot down Kim's missiles, it has been reported.

He did not comment on what might have caused the missile to fail but a n official said the missile was a Scud variant that the U.S. calls a KN-17.

Pointing to Trump's recent military actions in Syria and Afghanistan, Pence said, "North Korea would do well not to test his resolve", or the US armed forces in the region.

The term "reckless" is one the North Koreans have used to describe continuing large-scale US and South Korean military exercises, which the North calls a dress rehearsal for an invasion.

Pence is on a 10-day Asia-Pacific tour that has been dominated by the North Korea issue.

Events could spur China to agree on action that would impact North Korea's entire economy, said an editorial Tuesday in the Global Times, run by the Communist Party's People's Daily news outlet.
