Democrat fails to avoid run-off in Georgia election, Trump declares victory

Trump's tweet:"Despite major outside money, FAKE media support and eleven Republican candidates, BIG "R" win with runoff in Georgia".

Jon Ossoff, a 30-year-old Democrat and former congressional staffer who ran on the slogan "Make Trump Furious", almost won Tuesday's special election for Georgia's 6th congressional district, which the GOP has held since 1979.

If Ossoff were to finish below the 50 percent threshold - as most Republican and even Democrats expected - he'd then enter a run-off against the second leading vote-getter, in all likelihood a Republican candidate.

Ossoff will face Republican candidate Karen Handel in a runoff election in June.

The victor replaces Republican Tom Price, who stepped down to serve as Trump's Secretary of Health and Human Services.

The White House has claimed a special election in Georgia in which a young Democrat came first by nearly 30 points, was in fact a "big loss" for the party. Is Tuesday's vote a predictor of Democratic gains in 2018 mid-term elections? "Glad to be of help!"

Ossoff almost pulled off a major upset win in a district comprising some of Atlanta's wealthiest, best-educated suburbs - an area that has been represented in Congress by Republicans for almost four decades.

You just tweeted moments ago to Donald Trump, "thank you for the call this morning".

Democrats mostly consolidated support behind Ossoff, a 30-year-old filmmaker and former congressional aide.

At 84 percent of precincts reporting, Ossoff led with 48.6 percent of the vote, while Handel had 19.5 percent, according to the Associated Press. Indeed, Ossoff ended up winning over 60 percent of the early vote that was reported Tuesday night, and there was speculation on Twitter for a bit that he would win Round 1 outright.

The 6th district encompasses much of suburban Atlanta and until recently was considered a shoe-in for Republicans. If so, Ossoff would win outright in a district that hasn't been represented by a Democrat since 1979, in a race few gave him a serious chance of claiming as recently as February. Trump also recorded a robocall accusing Ossoff of planning to "flood our country with illegal immigrants".

Ossoff said on CNN that Trump was misinformed about his positions and that he was focused on issues affecting the northern Atlanta suburbs, not Washington.

With the slogan "Make Trump Furious", Ossoff aims to galvanize opposition to a president struggling with an approval rating that has not topped 50 percent since he took office on January 20, according to Reuters/Ipsos polling.
