Disputed Griezmann penalty gives Atletico edge over Leicester

  • Leicester lost their Champions League quarter-final so let's focus on Atletico Madrid's stunning stadium instead

Antoine Griezmann's disputed first half penalty gave Atletico Madrid a slender 1-0 victory over Leicester City in their Champions League quarterfinal first-leg clash at the Vicente Calderon on Wednesday (12/04).

It was Griezmann who inevitably received possession and scurried into Leicester's half and was awarded a controversial penalty.

"We know we have to be more open because we need a goal and one of Atletico's pluses is their ability on the counterattack", Shakespeare said.

Arturo Vidal sent Bayern ahead in the 25th minute of the contest, but the Chilean missed a penalty on the stroke of the interval, before Cristiano Ronaldo's double in the second period turned the last-eight tie around.

Methodical Madrid continued to try to unpick Leicester and Angel Correa was inches away from connecting with Griezmann's cross with 16 minutes left. We know it is going to be a hard return match but we have a very good record at the King Power.

For those Foxes fans venturing into Atleti's home for the first time, we hope they appreciated just how attractive a stadium it is despite their team's narrow 1-0 defeat.

"We need to deny them space because they're a very, very good counter-attacking team".

Atletico are bidding to reach the last four for the third time in four seasons following their losses to city rivals Real Madrid in the 2014 and 2016 finals. "It was definitely a foul, but it was outside the box".

However, there was a blow when defensive linchpin Robert Huth was booked for a foul on Griezmann which rules him out of Tuesday's second leg at the King Power Stadium.

"I've seen enough throughout the squad, through working with them".

Leicester overcame a one-goal deficit to defeat Sevilla in the previous round, although on that occasion they went into the home leg with an away goal under their belts.

Leicester manager Craig Shakespeare said he had to tinker with his team's set-up to shackle the risky forward, who Simeone has given the licence to roam. Wes has been out on the grass the last few days, which is really pleasing.

When offering his reflections on the controversy, the Leicester head coach said: "I think it is a disappointing moment, a key moment".
