Ducks sweep away Flames with 3-1 win in Game 4

If the first three games of the Washington Capitals-Toronto Maple Leafs series were any indication, Wednesday's Game 4 was bound to hit overtime.

Anaheim Ducks' Logan Shaw, right, is checked by Calgary Flames' Freddie Hamilton during the second period of Game 4 in a first-round NHL hockey Stanley Cup playoff series Wednesday, April 19, 2017, in Calgary, .

When Calgary threatened to gain momentum, Anaheim's leadership and poise prevailed to carry the Ducks to a four-game sweep of the Flames in their best-of-seven Western Conference quarterfinal.

The Ducks play the victor of the series between the Edmonton Oilers and San Jose Sharks, who are tied 2-2, in the second round of the playoffs.

Goaltender John Gibson made 36 saves to redeem himself after being pulled during the second period of the Ducks' come-from-behind 5-4 victory over Calgary in overtime two nights earlier. Chad Johnson stopped 20 of the 21 shots he faced. It was the Ducks' first four-game sweep since they eliminated Winnipeg in the first round in 2015 and just the fifth in franchise history.

Erik Karlsson's shot from the blue line was intentionally wide and Ryan, getting behind rookie Charlie McAvoy, poked the puck past Tuukka Rask (26 saves) and just over the goal line past a diving Zdeno Chara.

This series has been one of extremely unfortunate occurrences for the Flames.

The dissatisfaction wasn't necessarily with what happened - Calgary entered its first round series a decided underdog against the Pacific Division champion Anaheim Ducks - but more so with how it happened. "We're down three and there's two players that have played pretty well in the games they've come in".

Calgary revived on Monahan's redirection of a Kris Versteeg feed at 16:07 to trail by a goal heading into the third. Anaheim comes into tonight's game 49-23-13 overall and 18-15-9 on the road while Calgary is 45-35-5 overall and 24-17-1 at home.

The energy started to drain from the Saddledome after Patrick Eaves's harmless-looking wrist shot from a sharp angle banked in off the inside of Elliott's left pad.

"As a goalie you take pride on giving yourself and your team a chance to win every night", he said. Should they win tonight, they'll head back to the Honda Center, where the team is allegedly cursed. In this series we had a little bit of everything.

"They were true to their word saying they probably deserved a better fate in some of the situations", said Carlyle.
