Ex-NFL star Aaron Hernandez dead after hanging self in cell

20 April, 2017, 13:40 | Author: Mae Harvey

He was discovered hanged, with a bedsheet around his neck, at 3 a.m. on Wednesday, inside his cell at the Souza-Baranowski Correctional Center, a maximum security state prison in Shirley.

Lifesaving techniques were administered to the former New England Patriots tight end and he was rushed to a hospital, where a physician pronounced him dead at approximately 4:07 am (0807 GMT).

Prison officials said Hernandez was in a single cell in the general population and wasn't on suicide watch, and in the wake of his death, one lawmaker said there needs to be changes made to the current system.

Hernandez tried to block the cell door from the inside by jamming the door with various items, Fallon said.

Massachusetts State Police will continue to investigate the suicide.

Hernandez, 27, had showed no signs of mental illness and thus had not been sent to a mental health unit.

"The family and legal team is shocked and surprised at the news of Aaron's death", Baez said in the statement.

His death left friends, family and his legal team in disbelief, searching for an explanation.

Prosecutors said Hernandez opened fire on their auto because he felt disrespected when one of the men bumped into him and spilled his drink at a Boston nightclub.

But the news was received differently to the mother of Odin L. Lloyd, the Dorchester man who Hernandez was convicted of murdering in 2013. Prosecutors suggested Lloyd may have been killed to keep him quiet about the 2012 Boston killings.

The Massachusetts Appeals Court will probably vacate Hernandez's conviction in the coming months. Because he had not exhausted his appeals, the murder conviction will be vacated under a MA legal principle that dates to pre-Revolutionary War times.

The civil case against Hernandez is also likely to be dropped, according to Chapman.

"You could tell that he was relieved as well", said Ronald Sullivan Jr., Hernandez's attorney.

He had his daughter with Shayanna Jenkins, who he began dating in 2007. Cameras captured the exchange. The 2015 conviction will reportedly be voided in the wake of Hernandez's suicide Wednesday.

A star tight end for the University of Florida when it won the 2008 title, Hernandez dropped to the fourth round of the National Football League draft because of trouble in college that included a failed drug test and a bar fight.

Borges covered Hernandez when he played tight end for the Patriots and wrote an in depth article for Rolling Stone Magazine on him after his 2013 arrest on murder charges. Hernandez's death came on the day that the team was visiting the White House to celebrate its fifth Super Bowl victory.
