Facebook CEO wants to augment your reality

20 April, 2017, 07:46 | Author: Nadine Todd

Speaking at the developers event in San Jose, California, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced Facebook's new Camera Effects Platform, which is created to giving developers the power to build AR tools.

"Augmented reality will let us mix the digital and the physical", Zuckerberg said in his keynote address to 4000 developers, "and that will make our physical reality better". He also said that "Even though we were a little slow to add cameras to all our apps, I'm confident that now we're going to push this augmented reality camera forward". However, Zuckerburg also mentioned that the new AR tools will not magically transform users' experience.

According to Facebook's Camera Effects page, two main tools take the center stage of the platform: AR Studio, a collection of tools for 3D artists and developers who want to create effects for photos and videos, including masks, animated frames, and other augmented reality interactions; and Frame Studio, a way of creating interesting, albeit static overlays.

Zuckerberg envisions the marriage of augmented reality and Facebook's camera feature enabling people to make even mundane chores, like doing the dishes, look entertaining with digital effects.

It also launched a virtual world, called Facebook Spaces, created to let users of its Oculus Rift VR headset hang out with avatar versions of their friends in a virtual world.

Possible topics go from "Big Blue App", the video of a murder that was posted to Facebook last weekend, updates on Messenger, WhatsApp, Instagram, Oculus, Facebook for Work, Facebook Lite, and the rest of the company's portfolio.

Facebook states that its Messenger Platform has more than 1.2 billion people, 100,000 developers and 100,000 monthly active bots, and 2 billion messages are sent between people and businesses on Messenger every month, so it's no wonder they're making major new add ons and improvements to their ever popular platform.

The addition of new QR codes to the Messenger makes it possible to learn more about events in the real world by scanning them with your phone. Zuckerberg used the example of visiting the Coliseum and holding up a phone to learn more about the history and structure of the building.

Facebook just built a virtual reality version of.

Vaguely comparable to what Microsoft is looking at accomplishing with their HoloLens headset, Facebook are looking to use AR for art, information, gaming and commercial purposes. Zuckerberg initially said it was "crazy" that Facebook could have impacted the election, though later backtracked on his comments.

Messenger will also let people chat with outside businesses as a group.

Stephens filmed and then posted the video of the attack to Facebook, but was found dead in his auto on Tuesday.
