Facebook pushes to augment reality through smartphones

20 April, 2017, 09:20 | Author: Nadine Todd

Facebook has launched a new platform for developers today which will enable them to build augmented reality experiences for its in-app cameras.

Facebook's new augmented reality (AR) camera might soon be blurring the lines between the two, according to its founder Mark Zuckerberg. And in order to create better tools, first we need an open platform where any developer in the world can build for augmented reality without having to first build their own camera and get a lot of people to use it.

"Building an open platform I think is going to be one of the big advances that pushes this forward. all developers can work on [the open platform] so that way you don't just have 10 or 20 effects but you have thousands". Frames Studio which is a global online creative editor, that allows you to design frames that can be used either as profile picture frames or in the new Facebook camera.

Via the new feature, while snapping with the rear-facing camera, users can tap the camera screen to find the new 3D lenses.

At the F8 developer conference, Zuckerberg said that the first step that made sense was to release products that people already knew about, which sounded like a way to justify the copying.

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg offered his condolences to the family of the man who was recently murdered in a video that was posted on the social network, and promised the company will do more to remove violent material from the site.

Facebook also used the developers conference to introduce a test version of a virtual-reality (VR) application that lets people in different locations socialize in virtual worlds using Oculus Rift headgear.

Facebook Spaces allows up to three friends to hang out in a virtual room.

Facebook also announced a new programme for developers all over the world to connect, learn, and collaborate with other local developers. With the enhanced presence of Giphy on Facebook, you can add your favourite Cat GIFs nearly everywhere.

While Snapchat's offering to developers is limited to geofilters, Facebook has invited its worldwide developer community to use its tools to create geofilters, filters, masks, etc.

Facebook Messenger will now have a discovery tab.

Messenger bots can now be added to group chat conversations.
