Facebook Takes Deeper Dive Into Augmented Reality

"For those of you watching us roll out cameras (read copying Snapchat) across all our platforms, that was act one". He also said that Facebook isn't anxious about "no innovation" allegations and defended copying Snapchat by saying that it was the ground work for Facebook's Camera Effects Platform for developers.

The Stories feature in the Facebook app was just the first step, Zuck said, adding that Facebook has some big plans for the AR functionality. Each year, Facebook invites developers to gather and gain insight into what the social media giant has up its sleeve.

Speaking at F8, Facebook's annual conference for software developers, chief executive Mark Zuckerberg talked about the AR tools he envisions on the social platform. With the AR Studio tool, developers and artists build animated frames, masks and effects that can be used during Live broadcasts to add animated frame, masks and effects to video. Zuckerberg said the company is making the "first mainstream augmented reality platform out of the camera", called "Act 2".

"While the announcement seems pretty innocuous, make no mistake: Facebook is, once again, putting itself into direct competition with Google and Apple, " he said.

The other camera effect is the Frame studio.

Facebook also announced a new programme for developers all over the world to connect, learn, and collaborate with other local developers.

"All this work is going to go into the glasses we all want", he stated.

The app is billed as a "virtual" manifestation of Facebook, allowing users to create a personalised avatar before interacting with friends. The company has released the closed beta of its AR Studio platform, which will be "open" in later stages.

Zuckerberg said new phone-based applications might include creating a three-dimensional scene from a single two-dimensional photo or splattering the walls of your house with colorful (virtual) art. In this virtual world, users can hang out with avatar versions of their friends in a virtual world.

The Facebook founder also briefly addressed a tragedy that took place Monday, when a man posted video of a murder on Facebook.
