Officials were first notified of the event when an emergency Global Positioning System locator beacon was set off below the canyon's North Rim, according to a National Park Service representative.

The family had hiked down to Tapeats Creek when Lou-Ann Merrell and the boy lost footing.

Standefer's uncle Mark McOmie told the Denver Post that both Lou-Ann and her husband Randy Merrell are keen hikers and know the area well.

In a statement that went out across Merrell's social media channels on Wednesday, Jim Zwiers, executive vice president, Wolverine Worldwide, said, "Our thoughts, prayers and hearts are with Randy Merrell and his family". Chief Ranger Matt Van Dzura says an alert was sent out Saturday evening, and the park service called in the Arizona Department of Public Safety to investigate.

But the intense search for Merrell and Standefer continues, said spokeswoman Robin Martin.

The National Park Service has deployed a helicopter, drone, inflatable motor boat and about 20 search and rescue personnel.

A helicopter and a drone on Monday were assisting searchers on the ground.

"We've offered our assistance to the National Parks System to aid in the search and rescue".

This item has been corrected to show Randy Merrell's name was misspelled, Merrill.

Authorities are searching for Jackson Standefer, 14, and Lou-Ann Merrell, 62, after the pair lost their footing Saturday and fell into the water during a family trip in a remote area of the Arizona park.

But the park's almost 2,000 square miles, steep cliffs and mesmerizing views have often led to accidents and deaths.

Authorities searched Grand Canyon National Park on Monday, April 17, 2017, for eighth-grader Standefer and his step-grandmother who were swept away as they tried to cross a creek during a family trip in a remote part of the park.

GRAND CANYON NATIONAL PARK, Arizona (AP) - The parent organization of the hiking boot company co-founded by a man whose family is missing in the Grand Canyon says the company continues to be hopeful.

Creeks in the canyon often see higher water levels in the spring as snow melts, Vandzura said.

He said that area is particularly hot during the day and doesn't cool off very much because of the geology. He said it looks as if they were able to get their backpacks off.

McOmie said late Tuesday night that relatives hope Merrell and the boy will be found soon. Forsyth said that he hasn't visited Tapeats Creek this year but has been to other parts of the park, where he's noticed more water than usual, he said.

Jackson is an eighth-grade student at McCallie School in Chattanooga, Tennessee.
