First Woman To Wear A Boston Bib Races Again, 50 Years Later

  • Geoffrey Kirui won the men's 2017 Boston Marathon

The Boston Marathon was no exception, but in 1967 young Kathrine Switzer was a keen runner and wanted to take part - despite her coach telling her a marathon was too far for a "fragile woman".

Switzer was a 20-year-old student at Syracuse when she entered the men-only Boston Marathon in 1967, using her initials on the registration form.

Switzer ran the marathon wearing the number 261, the same number male participants had tried to rip off her clothing in 1967.

Jordan Hasay from the United States, who was making her debut in marathon clocked 2:23.00 for third place. The race resonated far beyond a footnote in the record books when an official tried to force her from the course after a few miles.

Fifty years ago, a runner officially entered as K.V. Switzer participated in the Boston Marathon. The lone runner, an 84-year-old from Santa Cruz, California, churned out a steady official time of 6:04:07. Rupp, a three-time Olympian, took second in 2:09:58 and was the top American. "It was incredible", she told ABC News after the race.

After the race this year, Switzer's number was retired in her honor. The course started to wear on him around Mile 8 or 9, which he said normally doesn't set in until just over halfway through the race.

" 'You'll never have children, ' they said".

The heat plagued many local runners as they made their way from Hopkinton to Boylston Street at the Boston Marathon.

This helped speed up her recovery time.

Other area finishers were Jan Wellford, of Keene, who crossed the line in 3:06:56, Julie Bowler (Saranac Lake) in 3:29:12, Kirk Fasking (Lake Placid) in 3:59:35, Darci Lafave (Lake Placid) in 4:06:08 and Rachel Stanton (Lake Placid) in 4:31:11.

Before the race, she wrote on Facebook: "Today is the race of my life".

But while Gibb seemed to pass unnoticed during the run, race director Jock Semple was infuriated and went after Switzer midrace.

It was the Boston Marathon yesterday, and it marks 50 years since an incredible event for runners and women everywhere.

"But if I get near the finish line and I look over there and I see somebody who's got gray hair and is maybe is in my age group, I'm just going to kick a little butt", Switzer said, laughing. They ran 26.2 miles together three weeks before the race, and Switzer suggested they go five more - just to be sure.
