Vice President Pence, visiting Japan on his 10-day tour of Asia, said the USA has launched bilateral talks with Tokyo in the hopes of reaching a new trade agreement.

The Trump team has signaled it intends to chart a new path when it comes to dealing with North Korea, though analysts say there aren't too many new options to try.

As a candidate, President Donald Trump said he would be willing to speak with Kim.

North Korea did test a missile on Sunday, but by US and South Korean accounts it failed "within seconds".

"The enemies of our freedom and this alliance would do well not to test the resolve of this president or the capabilities of the armed forces of the United States of America and our allies", Pence said.

TOKYO-Vice President Mike Pence praised investment by Toyota Motor Corp. and other Japanese companies in the USA while avoiding criticism of Tokyo's trade practices, drawing a relieved welcome from business leaders here.

"China is the source of energy, of ideas, of innovation, of expertise", she said, noting 95 of direct investment in North Korea come from China and that the North's exports mainly goes to China.

"The policy of President Trump is to marshal the support of our allies in the region - Japan, South Korea, nations around the world, and China", Pence said.

He also said, "We are with you 100 percent", adding that the USA always seeks peace.

One of the most common refrains from Trump, Pence and Secretary of State Rex Tillerson has been "the era of strategic patience is over", referring to what was essentially a wait-and-see tactic to dealing with Pyongyang but is notoriously vague, says Neill.

"That kind of economic and diplomatic pressure will result we hope in the regime in Pyongyang forfeiting their ambitions, forfeiting their nuclear weapons program and join the family of nations".

Degrading North Korea's missile capability via hacking is a tactic that is actively being pursued by the United States military, according to public statements and congressional testimony by current and former members of the armed forces.

U.S. Vice President Mike Pence has once again pledged the Trump administration's commitment to defending its allies in Asia from North Korea and any other threats.

"Washington is very intent on pursuing bilateral trade negotiations, not only with Japan, but with other trade partners in the region", she said.

After talks with Japan's deputy prime minister, Taro Aso, Pence said the USA would work with Japan, China and other nations to get Pyongyang to give up its atomic weapons program.

It later emerged that the Navy strike group, led by the USS Carl Vinson, which was thought to be on its way was actually headed in the opposite direction.

"The point the President was making is that we're ready".

Pence arrived in Japan after visiting South Korea and leaves for Indonesia later on Wednesday. "We want to send an unambiguous message especially to North Korea that any attempt to use weapons of any kind against our allies in this region or American forces overseas will be defeated and will be met with overwhelming force", Pence said in an interview with CNN.
