"Statistics show the United States has achieved much through the free trade agreement", said Kim Kwang-doo, the head of frontrunner Moon Jae-in's campaign advisory group, told Reuters in an interview.

Speaking to USA and Japanese troops on board the USS Ronald Reagan aircraft carrier Wednesday, he called North Korea the most urgent and unsafe threat to the peace and security of the Asia-Pacific region.

SENSITIVE SECTORS On the morning of the Aso-Pence meeting, Japanese Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry Hiroshige Seko and U.S. Secretary of Commerce Wilbur Ross also met in Tokyo to discuss economic cooperation in such areas as cybersecurity and infrastructure.

"America has played a certain role in Asia since 1945. that role has in the end of the day been a stabilizer", Delury said.

"At some point in the future, there may be a decision made between our nations to take what we have learned in this dialogue and commence formal negotiations for a free trade agreement", Pence told the press after the meeting.

A Japanese official says a difference in approach remains with the US despite an agreement on a framework for new bilateral economic talks.

Robert Lighthizer, Trump's pick for US trade representative, named Japan as "a primary target" for improving access for American farm products. It is his first trip to Asia as vice president.

The April 18 inaugural session in Tokyo of the Japan-U.S. Many have speculated that North Korea is gearing up to conduct a sixth nuclear test; it remains unclear exactly how the Trump administration would respond. The focus of his trip is expected to shift in Japan to trade.

When Vice President Pence spoke at the Korean demilitarized zone on Monday, he said that the United States sought to solve the North Korean crisis "through peaceable means and negotiations", after increasing pressure on the Pyongyang regime.

Vice President Pence, visiting Japan on his 10-day tour of Asia, said the US has launched bilateral talks with Tokyo in the hopes of reaching a new trade agreement.

"There's no question North Korea represents the most risky and most immediate threat in the Asia-Pacific and President Trump is determined to confront that threat by marshaling unprecedented cooperation with allies in the region and China and the world", Pence said. North Korea's nuclear and missile development dominated the agenda on his first stop in South Korea.

Pence said the North represents the most unsafe and most immediate threat in the Asia-Pacific and President Donald Trump is determined to confront that threat by marshaling unprecedented cooperation with allies in the region, China and the world.

White House officials say the meetings in Tokyo are meant to forge a framework for future discussions after the USA withdrew from a Pacific Rim trade pact.
