House Oversight Committee Chairman Jason Chaffetz said Wednesday he will not run for reelection when his current term concludes at the end of 2018.

Chaffetz, who has served several terms in Congress, said he chose to announce his decision now to give other candidates the proper time period to build a successful campaign.

According to a statement Chaffetz, a Republican representing Utah's 3rd Congressional District, released on Facebook, he said, "it is time", citing his stance of serving only as long as one needs to. Many of you have heard me advocate, "Get in, serve, and get out".

Chaffetz left open the possibility that he "may run again for public office, but not in 2018". I would take a serious, serious look at running for governor. Chaffetz's panel is investigating payments made to Michael Flynn, Trump's former national security adviser, for speaking engagements in Russian Federation and the security protocols at President Trump's Mar-a-Lago club in Palm Beach.

But Friends of Jason Chaffetz registered two web domains more than a week ago, Fusion first reported, citing a search on the WhoIs domain name directory: Jason2028.com and JasonChaffetz2028.com.

As the Republican chair of the House Oversight Committee, Chaffetz has come under fire for not investigating President Donald Trump's possible conflicts of interests, and pursuing investigations of Hillary Clinton, becoming a target of the anti-Trump movement.

After wrapping up his Presidential campaign in December, McMullin told a Reddit AMA that he has not made a decision about his political future, and sources say that hasn't changed-though McMullin's operation found out only this morning that Chaffetz would be leaving office.

House Oversight Committee Chairman Jason Chaffetz, R-Utah, made a surprising announcement Wednesday saying he would not be running for re-election next year. Chaffetz won 73 percent of the vote last fall. "Undoubtedly, he will appreciate being able to spend more time here in the great state of Utah".

"I have no ulterior motives".

Cox, a resident of the part of Sanpete County that falls in the 4th Congressional District, also declined to commit to a gubernatorial run - a bid Chaffetz hasn't ruled out either.

"I think if I wanted to run, I would be very competitive", Chaffetz said Wednesday afternoon in an interview with Neil Cavuto on Fox News.

The job also allowed him to annoy residents of Washington, D.C., a predominantly Democratic jurisdiction, often meddling in District affairs.
