Late-Night Hosts Remember the "Funny, Sharp and Generous" Don Rickles

The legendary stand-up died of kidney failure at his home in Los Angeles, his publicist confirmed.

93-year-old iconic actress Rose Marie said: "One of my dearest friends is gone".

Rickles' signature insult phrases of "dummy" and "hockey puck" catapulted his curmudgeon performance personality and helped him survive an up-and-down career that was affected by taste changes in comedy, Variety noted.

Rickles reveled in being the opposite of politically correct. "I had like hit and run, and I mean I worshiped the guy, too, because my father worshiped him", he said.

"Sitting behind a desk while Don Rickles made fun of me".

Born in the Jackson Heights section of Queens in New York, Rickles was the only child of an insurance salesman and housewife.

Rickles' last appeared on stage in Las Vegas in late October.

"In January 2005, Rickles appeared with Bob Newhart, whom he considered his best friend, on "The Tonight Show With Jay Leno" the day after Johnny Carson's death to reminisce about their many guest appearances on Carson's show".

Actor Billy Crystal tweeted: "Don Rickles has passed away".

"They called him "Mr. Warmth" as a joke, but that was what he was", Kimmel assured his viewers before getting choked up.

Tributes poured in Thursday on news of his death. "We are devastated and our world will never be the same".

Rickles guested on Kimmel's show 18 times since it went on the air in 2003, and over that period, Kimmel and Rickles formed a meaningful relationship with each other, both on and off set.

Our thoughts and well-wishes go out to Don and everyone who loved him during this incredibly different time. "Such a professional, such a gentleman". Rickles visited 17 more times after that. "Then we did "Casino" with Don, 20 years ago - and we haven't worked together since". Unfortunately today Rickles ended up passing at the age of 90 in LA.

He said he was still operating with the same spontaneous humor he always had. So I don't think I'm offensive onstage.

"Dear Jimmy, thanks so much for the lovely frame of you and I..."

Jimmy Kimmel paid tribute to comedy legend Don Rickles on Thursday night's episode of "Jimmy Kimmel Live" on ABC. His inspired takes on people enabled him to be a real-time reader of people and made for some of the most lethal hot takes ever imagined.
