Leicester eye Champions League return after first 'taste' left them wanting more

20 April, 2017, 13:36 | Author: Alberta Rodriguez

Danny Simpson says there will be no complaints from any of the Leicester players if Craig Shakespeare stays on as manager beyond this season.

Saul Niguez's goal midway through the first half meant that Leicester had to score three goals to go through.

But having dined at the top table of European club football, Drinkwater insists he and his teammates are hungry to return one day. They are very disappointed tonight but they can be proud of what they've achieved.

However, it wasn't to be for the Foxes, as a resilient Atletico side held firm to book their place in the semi-finals, and in turn ended a sensational Champions League run from Leicester.

Skipper Wes Morgan, who held the Premier League trophy aloft this time past year, admits it's now back to reality for him and his team-mates.

With Leicester 12th in the Premier League it may be some time before they rub shoulders with Europe's elite again, but Shakespeare said that would now be the objective. "We weren't in it just to take part".

The victory put Madrid into the semifinals for the seventh straight time and kept alive its hopes of becoming the first team to defend the Champions League title since the competition's new format was created in 1992. He sent on Ben Chilwell and Leonardo Ulloa for Shinji Okazaki and defender Yohan Benalouane, flooding Vardy with greater support.

Atletico looked like they could pick Leicester off at will as they kept the ball and nearly killed the tie with Griezmann's exceptional work rate underpinning their performance.

Antione Griezmann, whose controversial first-leg penalty had given Atletico the edge, was a constant menace.

"We have to be proud of ourselves, we gave our all", said captain Wes Morgan, who returned for a month-long absence.

"Atletico Madrid are a big force in Europe and we pushed them all the way. I feel proud of the team and we have to keep working like we do in order to get to the final".

Atletico Madrid boss Diego Simeone was proud of his side as they progressed to the semi-finals of the Champions League.

"You're pitting your wits against one of the best managers in the world and one of the best sides in the world".

"I had to make the change earlier than I thought, but we had them rattled with the effort and commitment we showed".

Shakespeare has, of course, only been given the job until the end of the season but surely he has done enough to get it permanently.

Atletico are beaten finalists in two of the last three years and are still searching for their first title in the competition.

"The momentum was with us after Jamie Vardy's goal and we needed that second goal when the opportunity came, but it just wasn't to be".
