Subaru unveiled the Ascent concept at the NY auto show, now underway, giving us some clues of its new three-row-seat model.
Subaru is spending $140 million and adding more 1,200 jobs at Lafayette to support the Ascent and bolster its USA manufacturing footprint. And like most Subarus, power will be sent to an all-wheel drive system.
The Ascent Concept is, on the other hand, the polar opposite of that. But a right-hand drive version has not been ruled out with Subaru stating it wants to concentrate on the huge USA market first.
Subaru Australia's David Rowley said if that were to change "at some indeterminate time in the future, we're always interested in evaluating innovative new product from Subaru Corporation". The US-only SUV is Subaru's headline act at the 2017 NY motor show. Heck, even Volkswagen is getting into the seven-passenger game with the new Atlas and Buick is showing off its new Enclave Avenir here at the NY auto show.
Externally, the Ascent adopts the boxy style of the three-row wagons such as the Mazda CX-9, Toyota Kluger and Nissan Pathfinder. Subaru confirmed to Motor Authority that the engine will displace 2.4 liters and feature four cylinders placed in a horizontally-opposed position.
We can't help but wonder what else Subaru has planned for its new turbocharged engine.
Subaru's last 7-seater was the Tribeca, which was discontinued in 2014. Even only selling the Lafayette, Indiana-built Ascent in North America, it's unlikely to have problems shifting this largest model, especially if it can offer a more car-like experience on the road. Underneath, it'll be built on a tweaked version of the Subaru Global Platform announced in 2016; that promises a lower center of gravity and greater rigidity, for a more inspiring driving experience.
