  • Senate applauds Buhari for suspending SGF Babachir

The National Intelligence Agency (NIA), which led by Mr Oke, had laid claim to the money, Mr Buhari's office said.

The president of Nigeria has suspended the country's intelligence chief over the recent discovery of 43 million United States dollars (£33 million) in cash in a Lagos apartment.

A three-man committee comprising the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, and the National Security Adviser, headed by the Vice President, is to conduct both investigations.

The two would remain suspended pending the outcome of investigation into various allegations against them, a statement issued by Mr Femi Adesina in Abuja on Wednesday said.

"Most importantly, what business does Presidential Committee have with investigation of crime?"

"The most senior Permanent Secretary in the SGF's office, and the most senior officer in the NIA, are to act, respectively, during the period of investigation".

Sources explained that the reason the Presidency did not give the duo prior notice of their suspension was to ensure thorough investigation.

Sani, who represents Kaduna Central Senatorial District in the Senate, had accused the President of ignoring allegations of corruption against members of his cabinet.

The Presidency on Wednesday announced the suspension of the SGF and the NIA boss pending investigations into their separate matters are concluded.

Journalists: Have you been informed of the suspension?

The suspended NIA DG, Oke, betrayed emotions yesterday, fighting back tears when he visited the Aso Rock Presidential Villa in Abuja. I have not seen the press release so I can not comment on it.

Ayo Oke was pictured trying to get through to the Vice President's office but was denied entry by security operatives. Are you doubting the authenticity of the statement?

Answer: I am always here. I used to come here even before I was made SGF.

The National Security Adviser (NSA) General Babagana Monguno also met the vice president yesterday.

Alleged corruption and mismanagement have threatened to intensify the situation, one of the world's largest humanitarian crises, say critics of the government's handling of the northeast.
