  • Rob Gronkowski crashes the White House Press Briefing

Patriots' owner Robert Kraft compared his team's remarkable comeback, after being down 21 to 3 at halftime and overtime, to President Trump's unlikely campaign to win the White House.

New England Patriots tight end Rob Gronkowski crashed Spicer's White House press briefing on Wednesday.

"Sean, need any help?" a mischievous-looking Gronkowski asked after emerging from a door behind the podium.

In photos posted to social media Wednesday, the New England Patriots' turnout at the White House this year seemed to be noticeably smaller than in 2015, when the team last visited the executive residence.

"Along with the parade and ring ceremony, the opportunity and privilege to come to the White House is one of the great things about winning the Super Bowl, so we're very privileged to be here", the coach said.

Kraft compared the comeback and long odds to Trump's campaign for the presidency, saying in the primaries Trump "faced odds nearly as long as we faced in the fourth quarter".

He also thanks Donald Trump for hosting the team at this annual celebration and for supporting the team for so long. We all knew Tom Brady was a late scratch for the visit, and several other players such as Martellus Bennett and Devin McCourty made it known well in advance they wouldn't be attending either because of Trump. It said, "I am so happy and excited that our team is being honored at the White House today".

But Brady's absence is particularly notable given the close relationship he has with Trump. "It's a distinct honor for us to celebrate what was unequivocally our sweetest championship with a very good friend and somebody whose mental toughness and strength I greatly admire".

In his address to the team, the president didn't mention Brady, who has led the Patriots to five Super Bowl victories, including on February 5, when he helped New England overcome a 28-3 third-quarter deficit to capture a 34-28 overtime victory against the Atlanta Falcons.

If President Trump didn't like those inauguration photos, just wait until he sees the ones from Wednesday's New England Patriots visit. Kraft gave the money via his Kraft Group LLC.

No lawmakers attended the White House event.
