Shakespeare targets Champions League return for Leicester after fairytale ends

20 April, 2017, 13:35 | Author: Alberta Rodriguez

Following last season's incredible Premier League success Leicester have proved that anything is possible and Drinkwater revealed the squad believed they were capable of repeating the feat in the Champions League despite their lack of European experience.

Morgan said: "We are not in the running for the championship again and we are out of the Champions League, so the ride is over".

Vary is the first English player to score in a UCL quarter-final since Frank Lampard in 2012.

With Leicester 12th in the Premier League it may be some time before they rub shoulders with Europe's elite again, but Shakespeare said that would now be the objective. "They're very disappointed, but I said they can be proud of what they achieved".

"We spoke about playing direct and playing Jamie and Riyad [Mahrez] just off Leo [Ulloa] and having wing-backs. Not in my lifetime".

The team that were surprise champions of England's Premier League last season are out after reaching the quarterfinal in their first ever Champions League campaign.

The Spanish side went through 2-1 on aggregate after the two sides drew 1-1 on the night at Leicester's King Power Stadium.

Leicester were the lowest scoring side left in the competition but entered the clash knowing they had to score at least once to have any chance of progressing.

Manager Craig Shakespeare, who has revitalised the team since succeeding the sacked Claudio Ranieri, is out of contract at the end of the season. "Now we've had a taste of it, we want more".

The Argentine coach has transformed Atletico from sleeping giants to one of Europe's most feared teams in his five years in charge and he said he had fulfilled his initial aim when he took the reins of an ailing club in 2012. The forward is being heavily linked with a move to Manchester United but he'll be busy concentrating on trying to win the Champions League with Atleti first. They ended up winning the group after going 4-1-1 and picking up 13 points, two more the second-placed Porto.

"But there will be no complaints from the players or anyone if he does get the job".

"You've got to be careful that you don't get too carried away in football". I know everyone loves it here and we're a family, so I'm sure everyone wants to stay'.

"The here and now is the important bit and Arsenal, a week on Wednesday, is the next game".

But no one told Vardy the script and his determination and fight epitomised Leicester's battling qualities and, by the final whistle, the KP Stadium rose one last time for their heroes.

Atletico had all the odds stacked in their favour when they landed in Leicester. It was a big ask for him to play a game of this magnitude but I thought he was excellent.

It all sounds a far cry from the dizzy feats of last season. I have enjoyed the Champions League.
