Shanghai Auto Show: Volkswagen I.D. Crozz electric SUV concept unveiled

  • Movie star Jackie Chan attends the global launch of the Buick Velite 5 a extended range electric hybrid ahead of the Shanghai Auto 2017 show in Shanghai China Tuesday

That's an aggressive goal, given that the best-selling battery electric vehicle (the Nissan LEAF) has a lifelong global sales total of only about 240,000 units thus far. Thus, the Shanghai show will see the presentation of the concept of SUV ID in late April.

The race to electric supremacy within the auto industry is on and Volkswagen recently unveiled its latest contender.

The I.D. Crozz Crossover concept will be compact looking and will have a lowered roofline than that of 2018 Tiguan.

Volkswagen brand CEO Herbert Diess claims that the new Crozz concept is a "production possibility" and could hit the market as "soon" as 2020.

Volkswagen is planning to launch a range of electric cars beginning around 2020, and it's previewing that courageous new electric world with a series of concept vehicles.

A mix between a four-door coupe and a sports utility vehicle, the new I.D. Crozz SUV is the third model which will be sold under the I.D. sub-brand.

"If it was ever possible to make a one-hundred percent certain prediction of what the future will look like, here it is".

A worker assembles an e-Golf electric auto at the production line of the Transparent Factory of Volkswagen in Dresden, Germany, March 30, 2017. Thanks to that power saving ability, the I.D. Crozz can go up to 311 miles on a charge, and with fast charging it can recharge up to 80 percent in just 30 minutes.

The I.D. CROZZ was conceptualised as a sporty, interactively designed zero-emission all-rounder - with electric all-wheel drive that is equally impressive in the urban environment as it is on the tracks of an active lifestyle. Rumors suggest that one more I.D. concept is still forthcoming, a sedan.

Like the other ID concepts, the Crozz is based on Volkswagen's new Modular Electric Drive Matrix (MEB), which allows the axle and drive system modules to be spread out, giving it a long wheelbase.

Unfortunately, the I.D. Crozz does resort to the same type of cutesy features (and branding) that other automakers have floated to appeal to so-called millennials.

Inside, the Volkswagen I.D.

VW says that when the I.D. Crozz is in I.D. Pilot mode, it can drive itself autonomously. The roof ambient lighting and the roof-mounted laser sensors also light up; the headlights can even be set to blink at the driver as they come on. This crossover concept is also supposedly fully autonomous. Volkswagen drives the concept auto by adding single-speed, fixed-ratio gearboxes between each electric motor and its respective axle, which it dubs an "electric propshaft". The EV creates ample interior space by stashing the 83 kWh lithium-ion battery that powers its electric motors in the floor and doing away with clunky equipment like a transmission and rear drive axle.
