The Patriots go to Washington - some of them, at least

While some players stayed away in protest, the Super Bowl champion New England Patriots on Wednesday made the traditional visit to the White House where team owner Robert Kraft lauded his longtime friend, President Donald Trump, and likened his long-shot victory to the Patriots' own.

SCOTT HORSLEY, BYLINE: President Trump was beaming as he introduced the Patriots and posed for pictures on the South Lawn along with the team's five Lombardi trophies. Drawing a curtain around the White House does not serve that end.

Trump has repeatedly touted his ties to Patriots quarterback Tom Brady, though the MVP of Super Bowl LI dodged questions about their relationship in the lead-up to the game. Even his confidence was shaken, though, when New England fell behind the Atlanta Falcons by 25 points in the third quarter.

Trump mentioned eight players specifically, starting with third-year long-snapper Joe Cardona of Navy.

Players Devin McCourty, Martellus Bennett, Chris Long, Dont'a Hightower and LeGarrette Blount all chose to skip the South Lawn visit for political differences.

One noticeable missing face was that of Quarterback Tom Brady, who said he couldn't make it for "personal family matters".

The team's White House visit caps a dramatic Super Bowl victory.

The affable Gronkowski opened a door behind White House press secretary Sean Spicer on Wednesday afternoon.

"Need some help", Gronkowski asked to a chorus of laughter.

Spicer, who is an avid Patriots fan, took the interruption in stride by saying, "I think I got this, but thank you".

Australia and New Zealand dairy industry leaders say they would support USA moves to draw the World Trade Organization into a trade dispute with Canada, after Trump said existing rules were unfair.

The president borrowed a line from Patriots' head coach Bill Belichick to compare the heavy lifting he's trying to do as president to that of winning a Super Bowl. The coach agreed, but first he insisted on a rewrite. "As a child growing up, I never would have thought a president would have said my name by any means". And you know what he did? It was much better. And [Belichick] wrote me this attractive letter after the primaries. There are 64 players listed on the Patriots' active team roster, though it's unclear how many were invited.
