PM Malcolm Turnbull said the current 457 visa programme will be abolished to prioritise Australian nationals.

The programme, known as 457 visa, allows businesses to employ foreign workers for up to four years in skilled jobs where there is a shortage of Australian workers. He said that a new version of the visa programme will focus on recruiting only the "best and the brightest".

Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull said Tuesday that the country is overhauling a visa program that allows skilled workers from overseas to hold jobs for up to four years.

A day after the USA and Australia announced tightening of their skilled visa programmes, India said it was consulting both foreign governments and other stakeholders to assess the impact on its outwardly mobile skilled workforce.

In a statement online, Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull said it was about protecting jobs for Australian people.

Turnbull's statement resonated the stance taken by the Trump administration in the United States to restict use of the H1-B visa programme, which allows firms to hire foreign workers in specialised occupations.

Immigration Minister Peter Dutton said anyone now in Australia on a 457 visa will not be affected by the new arrangements. The clauses in the new visa programmes include a deeper English language testing with stringent labour tests and an additional work experience.

According to the Australian government, for example, most of the Indians who migrated in 2014-15 did so under the 457 program.

"We are bringing the 457 visa class to an end".

The 457 visa enables a foreign worker and their family to live and work in Australia for four years.

The Centre is looking into "consequences" of Australia's decision to curb its 457 work visa policy, used by over 95,000 foreign workers - a lot of them Indians.

What do you think of the decision to scrap the 457 visa?

Employees with a two-year visa will no longer have the option of permanent residency.

The new two-year visa won't be a pathway to permanent residency, but anyone now in Australia on a 457 visa won't be affected by the new arrangements. Turnbull also added that government would establish "a new training fund" for Australians to fill skills gaps.

Those who are now working in Australia on 457 visa will not be affected by these reforms.

Australia's One Nation Party says on its website that it "believes in balanced, zero net immigration".
