  • Timeline: Ivanka Trump goes to Washington, and sales surge

At US president Donald Trump's Mar-a-Lago resort on April 6, Ivanka Trump-the president's daughter, and now officially an advisor-joined in on a dinner of steak and Dover sole with Chinese president Xi Jinping.

Kellyanne Conway came out of media exile to make an appearance at the annual White House Easter Egg Roll, where she boosted about the president's limited successes with her typical roundabout speech and tactical turning questions, as well as defending his "historical Electoral College win", almost four months after Trump was inaugurated.

Klem, president of Ivanka Trump's brand, said in a statement, "The brand has filed, updated and rigorously protected its global trademarks over the past several years in the normal course of business, especially in regions where trademark infringement is rampant". All of the applications on record took place before she was a White House adviser. But on Tuesday, she said she had "reluctantly" changed her mind because political divisions "risk our ability to make a success of Brexit".

It is not clear how Trump, now a federal employee, will navigate continuing ties to far-flung foreign business interests.

The statement was an update to an initial email response sent to FN this morning, in which Klem stated: "The [Ivanka Trump] brand has filed, updated, and rigorously protected its worldwide trademarks over the past several years in the normal course of business, especially in regions where trademark infringement is rampant". "Foreign policy toward China is not a particular matter: it affects diverse national interests and every sector of society". Instead, the first daughter officially put the business in a trust and gave control of it to her in-laws.

In addition, China also agreed to help persuade the recalcitrant hermit kingdom of Kim Jong Un to open the North Korean market to Ivanka Trump goods. "She has retained authority to direct the trustees to terminate agreements that she determines create a conflict of interest or the appearance of one". "I would never have allowed it", said Norman Eisen, who served as chief White House ethics lawyer under President Barack Obama.

Ivanka's lawyer, Jamie Gorelick, said in a statement: "Ivanka will not weigh in on business strategy, marketing issues, or the commercial terms of agreements".

Today, Ivanka Trump Marks LLC has 16 registered trademarks in China and 32 pending applications, along with a total of four marks granted preliminary approval since the inauguration, according to China's Trademark Office.

Trump has always been conducting a corporate two-step, trying to build her own global brand as she has helped push her father's name into new parts of the world.

Klem later added that the company has seen a "surge in trademark filings by unrelated third parties trying to capitalize on the name".

Ivanka Trump's company won provisional approval to trade some products in China on the same day she dined with the country's president in her father Donald's complex in Florida, raising questions from ethics experts.

In China, the boundaries between business and politics are becoming blurrier for Ivanka Trump.

Bale said a bigger majority would give May a new batch of loyal Conservative lawmakers and leave her less at the mercy of euroskeptics in her party "who otherwise could have made negotiations much more hard".

"The brand has filed, updated, and rigorously protected its worldwide trademarks over the past several years in the normal course of business, especially in regions where trademark infringement is rampant", Abigail Klem, president of the brand, said in a statement.
