Trump congratulates Erdogan on disputed Turkey referendum

"As a result of evaluations, the appeals were rejected with 10 votes against and 1 vote in favour", it said in a statement.

Erdogan has dismissed the criticism from the observers, telling the monitors to "know your place".

"Efforts to cast a shadow on the result of the vote by spreading rumors of fraud are futile and in vain", Yildirim said.

"There is no doubt that President Erdogan has been repeatedly elected through a democratic process, but I think the approach that they've been taking towards the press is one that could lead Turkey down a path that would be very troubling", Obama said in an April 2016 news conference.

His narrow victory was ruled valid by Turkey's electoral body, despite claims of irregularities by the opposition.

"This is about the fact that actually the law only allows official voting envelopes".

The Turkish Bar Association described the move as "illegal".

Council of Europe observers say those irregularities could have changed the outcome of the vote. She offered no evidence.

The OSCE Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights (ODIHR) and the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) monitors "exceeded their limits", he said.

"Wait!" Erdogan told supporters.

What have European leaders said?

Prime Minister and AKP leader Binali Yildirim said Erdogan can rejoin the party he founded in 2001 once official results - expected before the end of the month - are announced.

Earlier, 19 people were detained for allegedly using the results of a constitutional referendum as an "excuse" to organize "unauthorized demonstrations", official Anadolu news agency reported.

The European Union is calling on the Turkish authorities to launch "transparent investigations" into "alleged irregularities" during last weekend's referendum on increased powers for the country's presidency.

Other European leaders have expressed concern about the possibility of the return of capital punishment.

The German foreign minister criticized politicians for making radical suggestions for domestic political gains.

"Moving from rhetoric to action would be a clear signal that Turkey does not want to be a member of the European family", he insisted. The "fiction" of Turkey's bid to join the bloc must be ended, Mr Kurz said.

By contrast, Donald Trump joined Russian President Vladimir Putin in congratulating Mr Erdogan, with the Turkish strongman expressing optimism over his relationship with the new U.S. leader.

"The government should focus on structural changes that will complement this constitutional reform".
