Trump declares Georgia Democrats are 'failing'

20 April, 2017, 06:25 | Author: Nadine Todd

Jon Ossoff is aiming to win the seat outright - topping 50% and avoiding a runoff. This portion of the 6th district was more evenly divided among GOP candidates.

Issues relating to Israel and the Middle East did not come up during the congressional race, and Ossoff, who is Jewish, did not deal much with foreign policy questions throughout his highly-watched campaign.

Tuesday's balloting in Georgia's 6th Congressional District didn't produce a victor, but Democratic upstart Jon Ossoff - seeking to replace Republican Tom Price, who was tapped by President Donald Trump for health and human services secretary - led all candidates with 48.1 percent of the vote.

It's a "jungle primary" featuring 18 candidates - including 11 Republicans and four Democrats. The two frontrunners will now face off on June 20.

Really, though, it's all about Ossoff - the only candidate who is expected to be in the ballpark of 50%. He recorded a robo-call and unleashed a barrage of tweets assailing Ossoff and, in a call Wednesday to Handel, pledged more help and resources ahead of the final vote.

Georgia's 6th district, which includes a swath of Atlanta's northern suburbs, is full of the kind of affluent, highly educated voters who have traditionally voted Republican but recoiled from Trump.

"Republicans must get out today and VOTE in Georgia 6", he said in a tweet posted at dawn Tuesday.

Special elections will hold particular importance for Democrats this year, as Republicans now control both the House and Senate.

I mean, the fact is that this could have been a big shockwave that was sent to the White House and Donald Trump. "And, the president was a big part of that".

The GOP has controlled the district since 1979.

"After successfully weathering $4.2 million in television smear attacks from D.C. Republicans, Jon Ossoff can finally draw a contrast between his vision for Atlanta's high-tech future and Karen Handel's background as a career politician with a history of wasteful spending", the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee wrote in a memo.

Ossoff defended himself against criticism of where he lives earlier Tuesday. She says it proliferated since Trump's victory, with several members acting as precinct captains for Ossoff. "My family is still there".

What's hard to know is how Ossoff's showing will be viewed by the Democratic base and the donor community. Anything short of describing that as a loss is sort of inconceivable to me in the sense that's what they said their goal was to do. But she also has a career in business as a public relations executive. State Sen. Judson Hill, endorsed by Gingrich and Florida Sen.

While Ossoff's massive haul was impressive, Republicans were quick to point out that 95 percent of that came from outside the state, buoyed by progressive blogs like Daily Kos and fundraising platforms like ActBlue. In either race, a swing of the sort we've seen in Georgia and Kansas would be significant, even if Democrats lose. "There's a Democratic enclave, and a higher Hispanic population, when comparing it.to Georgia".

It took a sudden evolution for the district to become competitive at all.

But 2016 told a much different story. Trump narrowly lost in both Costello and Meehan's districts, falling short in territory Mitt Romney narrowly won in 2012. The time for a long-term strategy is now, and it remains to be seen if Democrats are up for the challenge. Republicans are bidding to prevent a major upset in a conservative Georgia congressional district Tuesday where Democrats stoked by opposition t. He still engenders an intense loyalty among his core supporters but alienates many independents and even Republicans, leaving him unable to command a majority of the electorate. If the 30-year old Democrat had just one vote for every $87 spent by his campaign-which raised $ 8.3 million for a seat where the last Democratic candidate spent only $346-he would now be on his way to Washington.

"Ossoff will finally have an opponent to set up a clear and beneficial contrast". Is the president planning to campaign for the republican challenger there? Alyssa Milano and Christopher Gorham, in Georgia filming a pilot for CW, tweeted an offer to personally drive Ossoff voters to the polls.

So what's next for the Georgia election?
