  • Box Office Magic: Has The Live-Action 'Aladdin' Movie Found Its Genie In Will Smith?

Fans may remember that the Genie was previously portrayed by the late Robin Williams in the animated Disney film, which was released in 1992.

Until very recently, Smith was also in negotiations to join the cast of Tim Burton's Dumbo, but - as you may have guessed - those negotiations did not pan out.

Remember, sharing is caring. Additionally, Smith is well known for his musical prowess, which is bound to come in handy given the fact that Aladdin, like Beauty and the Beast is slated to be a live-action musical.

Perhaps the biggest hurdle Disney faced on its live-action remake of Aladdin was the prospect of replacing the irreplaceable Robin Williams, who is Genie. Will Smith certainly has the charisma and he most definitely has some serious acting chops as well, both in more serious roles and in big blockbuster movies.

Will Smith might end up working his magic for Disney after all.

The 1992 animated version of Aladdinwas also a huge success for the media giant, grossing over $504 million, according to Box Office Mojo. We'll just wait and see - with Aladdin being scheduled to begin production in July it won't be long till we get word on the film's casting.

Ritchie will direct from a script written by John August, the scribe who amusing enough worked with Burton on Big Fish. However, we aren't exactly sure what a live-action Genie is going to look like.

It doesn't hurt that the second coming will be directed by Guy Ritchie, with Jonathan Eirich and Dan Lin serving as producers, The Hollywood Reporter reported.
