Workers plug Alaska North Slope oil well that leaked gas

According to a Sunday report from the Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation, the well is no longer spraying crude oil, as it was when employees of BP Exploration Alaska Inc. identified it on Friday.

The current BP natural gas leak on the North Slope isn't even the only natural gas leak in Alaska right now - an underwater natural gas pipeline in Alaska's Cook Inlet has been leaking for three months, threatening sensitive waters that are home to endangered beluga whales.

"Based on an overflight with infrared cameras, the release appears to be contained to the gravel pad surrounding the wellhead and has not reached the tundra", the company said in a statement issued Saturday, the most recent available from BP as of early Monday morning in Alaska.

However, the incident didn't cause any sorts of injuries to the workers, and they also been taken to a safe location in a nearby Alaskan village which is located dozens of miles away from the oil well site; also there were no damages reported to the presence wildlife. The upper leak was the one leaking crude oil and hazardous natural gas, but a safety valve activated and shut that leak off.

It is still unclear, how much oil has spilled. North Slope production was up to 565,000 barrels a day in March, its highest level since December 2013. The well had been shut since Friday and the response is continuing, BP spokeswoman Dawn Patience said.

A BP-sponsored building at the London 2012 Paralympic Games. State officials said a cleanup will begin once the release has been controlled. The gas, which comes up along with oil, is typically pumped back underground to squeeze more crude oil out of the reservoirs.

By Sunday afternoon in Alaska, that had been stopped. Alyeska Pipeline Service Co.is a joint partnership between North Slope's producers Exxon Mobil Corp., BP Plc, and ConocoPhillips.

Alaskan North Slope crude was valued at $1.90 a barrel over United States benchmark West Texas Intermediate last Thursday. It has averaged a $1.16 premium to WTI this year.
