For second time this week, Trump jabs at Canada over trade

Canada regulates milk prices in a much more aggressive fashion than the US government does, but the Canadian government had not lowered the price of Canadian-made ultra-filtered milk until recently.

Canada's dairy farmers agreed past year to sell milk ingredients used for cheese-making to Canadian processors, who include Saputo Inc and Parmalat Canada Inc [PLTPRC.UL] at prices competitive with global rates.

The president took issue with Canadian changes on milk classification that he said have put farmers in Wisconsin and NY state out of business.

"We're going to call Canada and we're going to say 'What happened?'" Trump said during an appearance at a Snap-On Inc. tool plant in Kenosha, Wisconsin on Tuesday.

President Donald Trump singled out Canadian dairy industry trade practices on Thursday, bashing America's northern neighbor for their rules on imported dairy products. The spat was spurred by a new Canadian milk policy that US producers say violates NAFTA and comes at a sensitive time for U.S.

"We're going to get together and we're going to call Canada, and we're going to say, 'What happened?' And they might give us an answer, but we're going to get the solution, not just the answer, OK?"

"President Trump and I spoke yesterday about reversing Canada's new and unfair dairy-pricing policy", Schumer said in a statement.

The Dairy Farmers of Canada, which has previously denounced the complaints as "falsehoods and half-truths", said Tuesday it was confident the federal government would continue to defend the dairy industry.

As far as trade deals go, Holevoet said agreements should yield benefits for all sides. And we have a supply management system that works very well here in Canada.

Both are shielded from open trade in the existing North American Free Trade Agreement, employ more than 200,000 people in Canada, and claim a similar economic value of $14-15 billion to Canada's GDP.

"It's concerning when the president of your major trading partner is concerned that you've done something that's wrong - something that's unfair", Leyenhorst said. It said the USA has "raised serious concerns with Class 7". Some New York producers are also affected. At the time, Mr. Trump said, "We have a very outstanding trade relationship with Canada", adding that they would be only "tweaking" Nafta.

Trudeau told Bloomberg Television that the United States in fact ran a dairy surplus with Canada.

Despite Trump's promises to find a "solution" to the dispute, Stephenson said dairy farmers aren't holding their breath.

"Our federal and state governments can not abide by Canada's disregard for its trade commitment to the United States, and its intentional decision to pursue policies that are choking off sales of American-made milk to the detriment of US dairy farmers", said Tom Vilsack, the former secretary of agriculture and current president and CEO of the US Dairy Export Council, in a statement earlier this month. He said Thursday that steel is critical to the U.S.

Justin Trudeau, Prime minister of Canada, is anxious about Trump's protectionist talk as for him relationship with U.S.is crucial.

The U.S. Commerce Department is expected to decide by Tuesday whether to impose duties on Canadian softwood, which American producers say is overly subsidized and unfairly floods their market.

All U.S. dairy exports to Canada in 2016 totaled $631.6 million, a 14 percent increase from 2015, according to the U.S. Dairy Export Council.
