The official added that if the USA shows any sign of "reckless" military aggression, Pyongyang is ready to launch a pre-emptive strike of its own.

Before the failed launch, North Korea's Vice Minister Han Song Ryol had told the AP his country is prepared to wage war if that is what Trump desires.

North Korea saw the toppling of Saddam Hussein in Iraq and Moammar Gadhafi in Libya - neither of whom had nuclear weapons - as proof of the weapons' power.

Pence is due in Seoul at the start of a 10-day trip to Asia in what his aides said was a sign of the US commitment to its ally in the face of rising tension. The joint U.S. -South Korean military camp is just outside the 2.5-mile-wide DMZ.

The USS Carl Vinson aircraft carrier has been diverted back to the waters off Korea after heading for Australia, and USA satellite imagery suggests the North could conduct another underground nuclear test at any time.

Beijing has long opposed dramatic action against the North, fearing the regime's collapse would send a flood of refugees across its borders and leave the USA military on its doorstep. But at the same time, McMaster said on "This Week" on ABC, "it's time for us to undertake all actions we can, short of a military option, to try to resolve this peacefully".

The country launched a long-range rocket and conducted two nuclear tests previous year, including its most powerful to date. The first was of what it claims to have been a hydrogen bomb and the second was its most powerful ever.

"North Korea showing a variety of offensive missiles at yesterday's military parade and daring to fire a ballistic missile today is a show of force that threatens the whole world", South Korea's Foreign Ministry said in a statement.

The Associated Press furthers notes that in a statement Friday, North Korea's military drew parallels to past US actions against Iraq and Libya. He mentioned a tweet Trump posted Tuesday, in which he said North Korea is "looking for trouble".

Trump has threatened that if Beijing isn't willing to do more to squeeze the North, the US might take the matter into its own hands.

"That is something that our headquarters decides", Han said.

Impoverished North Korea and the rich, democratic South are technically still at war because their 1950-53 conflict ended in a truce, not a peace treaty. If not, we will solve the problem without them! But it's doubtful the North is now able to build reliable, survivable warheads for an intercontinental ballistic missile that can strike the US mainland, he said.

And on the same day, a top North Korean official offered a warning to the US, accusing President Trump of "creating a war situation".

According to the adviser, the USA had good intelligence both before and after the launch.

No planned response is expected from the Trump administration because the official, who spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss the administration's initial understanding of the launch, said there was no need for the U.S.to reinforce the failure.

Kim Jong Un, a 30-something leader who took power in late 2011 after the death of his father, Kim Jong Il, emphasizes nuclear weapons as the foundation of his national defense strategy.

South Korea's Defense Ministry said it was analyzing exactly how the North Korean launch failed.

"We've got a powerful nuclear deterrent already in our hands, and we certainly will not keep our arms crossed in the face of a USA pre-emptive strike", he said.

Also on Friday, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi said all sides must stop provoking and threatening and start taking a flexible approach to resuming dialogue.

Weapons analysts said they believed some of the missiles on display were new types of intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBM).

The response came with the grand bluster normally included in statements by North Korea, bluster like "nuclear justice".

Military experts generally agree a shooting war with North Korea would likely be far more costly than something along the lines of the recent targeted strike Trump ordered against a Syrian air base believed to be linked to a chemical weapons attack by the regime of Bashar Assad.

Even without nuclear weapons, the North could cause severe damage with its conventional artillery batteries aimed at the South Korean capital of Seoul.
