Pearl Jam rock the Hall of Fame

"Due to illness, Neil Young is regrettably no longer able to induct Pearl Jam at this year's induction ceremony", the statement said.

Sporting a massive white beard, David Letterman, 69, devoted much of his speech to praising the band that made seven appearances on his late-night show and features his good friend, lead singer Eddie Vedder.

On Friday, 2Pac joined ELO, Journey, Joan Baez, Nile Rodgers of Chic, Pearl Jam, and Yes as the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Class of 2017.

The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony goes down Friday night at Brooklyn's Barclays Center, with a pre-recorded telecast subsequently airing on HBO on April 29th.

Journey's Steve Perry briefly reunited on stage with his former bandmates for the first time publicly in 12 years to accept their induction into the Hall of Fame.

You know you've got a true headliner when David Letterman is just the warm-up. You can guess which song people are rooting for. It was one of the greatest prog-rock moments in Rock Hall history. They would recognise injustice and they would stand up for it. The vibe between the two, despite all of the recent drama around whether or not the band's former singer would show up, seemed genial.

But a rep for the band has countered those claims, telling EW, "We have just spoken with Steve Perry's manager and he confirmed to us that he will NOT be performing tonight". Letterman closed by reading a letter Eddie Vedder had given him to give to his son, Harry. "And we can not, can not be the generation the history of the world will look back on and wonder why they didn't do anything humanly possible to solve the biggest crisis in our time".

"Let us together repeal and replace brutality and make compassion a priority, " Baez told the Hall of Fame audience.

During Letterman's speech discussing Pearl Jam's longstanding animosity with TicketMaster, the "Late Show" host called the concert ticket-selling juggernaut "beady-eyed, bloodthirsty weasels", according to Pitchfork.
