  • Runoff in Georgia House race could test Trump

President Donald Trump said he was "glad to be of help" after a Democrat failed to win 50% of the vote in a Georgia election.

It seems clear that all eyes will be on the upcoming runoff election between Ossoff and Handel in June.

While Ossoff dominated the 18-candidate field on Tuesday, he will face much steeper odds in the June runoff now that Handel has the field to herself and Republicans are quickly coalescing behind her. Under the so-called "jungle primary" system, the top two candidates - Ossoff and Handel - will head into the June runoff.

The 6th District seat in the Georgia House became available in February when U.S. Rep. Tom Price, a Roswell doctor, was tapped by the Trump administration to serve as the U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services.

Trump defeated Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton past year, and Republicans have controlled the White House and both chambers of Congress since January. On Tuesday, however, voters in the affluent Atlanta suburbs turned out for a special election to hand a 30-year-old Democrat a whopping 30-point lead over his closest competitor.

In addition, Ossoff has also used anti-Trump sentiment, with the slogan "Make Trump Furious", to power his campaign, during which he also focused on the growing worry among Republicans that his victory could have a chilling effect on congressional races in future.

Pundits said Mrs Handel will likely win the run-off, but on Tuesday the Republican said in an interview with the Atlanta Journal Constitution: "Beating Ossoff and holding this seat is something that rises above any one person". Republicans are bidding to prevent a major upset in a conservative Georgia congressional district Tuesday where Democrats stoked by opposition t.

"I think this was a big loss for them".

However, while they did make impressive strides in traditionally Republican districts, they have yet to prove they can win federal elections in the era of Trump.

Price won the district in November with over 60 percent of the vote, but Trump beat his Democratic rival, Hillary Clinton, by barely a percentage point in the district.

Ossoff was backed by major Democratic PACs and raised $8.3 million this quarter, mostly from outside groups.

The special election in Georgia's 6th Congressional District has moved into extra innings. Mr Spicer said Mr Trump could campaign for her "if needed".

"‶This is already a remarkable victory", Ossoff said, according to the New York Times.

"We want everybody who is supportive of Republicans, so absolutely", Handel told The Associated Press after taking a congratulatory call from Trump Wednesday morning.

While no poll showed Ossoff getting to 50 percent (even with undecided voters allocated), he was dominating the early vote.
