Serena Williams planning 2018 return after confirming pregnancy

21 April, 2017, 17:00 | Author: Alberta Rodriguez

That was less than five months ago so we must assume that Williams knew she was pregnant at the time of her engagement announcement.

Tennis star Serena Williams shared a special surprise on Snapchat Wednesday.

Williams, 35, got engaged in December to Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian, 33.

Williams was engaged to Reddit co-founder, Alexis Ohanian, at the end of previous year and, if she is already 20 weeks pregnant, was expecting during her record-breaking run at the Australian Open, where she won her 23rd Major title without dropping a set. Very impressive! Winning the Australian Open also meant that she beat Steffi Graf's previous record for the most Grand Slam singles titles, taking her into the record books.

The victory during her first trimester returned her to world No 1 and she also became the oldest grand slam victor in the open era.

"I'm happy to confirm Serena is expecting a baby this fall", publicist Kelly Bush Novak told Reuters before confirming Williams intends to not to compete for the rest of the year before returning to the court in 2018.

The Reddit post was of an drawing of Serena wearing her tennis gear and Alexis on one knee proposing, with the words "Future Mrs. Kn0thing" above them.

Williams, who has played professionally for two decades, first gained the No. 1 ranking in 2002 and has held that spot for more than six years in total during her career.

In the space of two years, Konta has gone from world number 151 to breaking the top 10, with her sights already set on the very top.

Germany's Angelique Kerber, the current world number one, also sent her regards to her rival. Kim Clijsters retired briefly to start a family, then came back to action and won Grand Slam titles.

She was already nearly two months pregnant during that historic victory over her sister Venus Williams, which saw her become the most decorated tennis player of the Open Era and her first child is due later this year. "We didn't have that", she said. "It'll depend on her", Court said. Only one woman has won more: Margaret Smith Court, who claimed part of her 24 during the amateur era.

Victories in Indian Wells and Miami previous year - which included wins over Kerber and Serena - hinted that the two-time major victor was back to her best.
