  • Star QB Tom Brady to miss NFL champs' visit to White House

As he extolled the teams virtues and saluted individual players, the president did not name star quarterback Tom Brady, who notified the White House that he was dealing with a “personal family matter” and would not attend the ceremony.

Seven members of the team did not attend the White House event, including some who said they were skipping it for political reasons.

While Super Bowl champions have skipped the White House visit in recent years - including Brady, who cited scheduling conflicts in 2015 - all eyes were on the Patriots this year, who are in a particularity notable position because they have been linked to Trump in the past.

Fewer Patriots players visited Trump than attended the meeting with President Obama in 2015.

Brady said he was unable to attend the Wednesday event at which President Donald Trump honored the Super Bowl winners - reportedly because he was spending time with his ailing mother.

Brady has missed the team's last two visits to the White House.

Chris Long, Alan Branch, Legarrette Blount, Martellus Bennet, Dont'a Hightower and Devin McCourty said they aren't making the trip to Washington, D.C.

Some veteran players were simply bored with the process after appearing at the White House two years ago, the spokesman told the Times.

Trump has particularly close ties to the Patriots, counting owner Bob Kraft and Belichick as friends. The franchise has nine Super Bowl appearances.

NYT Sports Times apologizes? "Much better", Trump said.

The tight end popped his head into the briefing room and jokingly asked Press Secretary Sean Spicer whether he needed any help, drawing laughs. What do you guys think?

TRUMP: Now, immediately to me that means he's going to tone it down 'cause what he said was so nice. The New York Times was forced to come out, post-election, and send a letter to readers promising more balanced coverage, semi-apologizing for the biased, skewed and ultimately, inaccurate coverage of the Trump campaign. But Brady's wife, Gisele Bundchen, denied they were Trump supporters. But, unlike Trump, who doubles down when caught in a falsehood, the paper owned up to it. This is the first time it's gotten any media attention. "Basic reason for me is I don't feel accepted in the White House".

Boston Bruins goalie Tim Thomas declined to visit the Obama White House in 2012, saying in a statement: "I believe the federal government has grown out of control, threatening the rights, liberties and property of the people".
