Tesla recalling cars to address brake defect

  • Tesla recalls 53000 Model S, Model X vehicles for parking brake

Engineers believe a small gear, perhaps improperly built by a supplier, is to blame.

Tesla says that should the gear break the parking brake would be stuck in place, but it would still continue to keep the auto from moving.

Tesla recalled 2,700 Model X sport utility vehicles in the United States in 2016 because of a faulty locking hinge in third-row seats, noted Reuters.

Tesla will be sending out a recall notice to its customers, it will contain information on how the parking brakes can be replaced. No injuries have been reported from the malfunction. Tesla produced nearly 84,000 vehicles in 2016 and plans to make half a million in 2018, then 1 million in 2020.

Tesla might have a huge problem on its hands as the company has issued a voluntary global recall for 53,000 Model S and Model X vehicles to fix a malfunction in the parking brakes.

Tesla is insisting the potential problem doesn't constitute a safety issue, and that there have been no reported instances of the potentially problematic parking brake failing to hold a vehicle or messing with the braking performance in general.

Update: TechCrunch posted the e-mail sent to Tesla owners impacted by the recall.

Of the 53,000 vehicles involved in the recall, Tesla expects less than 5% of those to be affected by the defective part. "Because of the design of the gear, it is hard to tell exactly which vehicles are affected".

Tesla finished down 1% on the U.S. market, so the recall does seem to have had an effect on the company, even if only a short term one.

The replacements are going to start immediately and Tesla hopes to have replacement parts for all 53,000 cars worldwide by October 2017.

Mitsubishi, Mercedes-Benz, Citroen and Land Rover have also issued recalls this week, according to the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission's (ACCC) product recall website.

Tesla (TSLA) will open its first showroom in Ireland next week, almost five months after the company began taking orders for the Model S and Model X in the country.

Elon Musk has boasted the firm's production facility for its much anticipated Model 3 will look like an "alien dreadnought".
