  • Facebook live murder suspect Steve Stephens kills himself after pursuit

Police had searched for Stephens since Sunday, when they say he randomly killed a 74-year-old retired OH man and recorded it.

The video was later uploaded to Stephens' Facebook page, which has since been deactivated.

It marked a violent end to the almost 48-hour multistate manhunt for Steve Stephens, whose case brought another round of criticism down on Facebook over how well it polices objectionable material shared by users.

The murder and a video sparked outrage across the world and renewed scrutiny of the growing number of grisly videos being posted on social media.

"This started with one tragedy and ended with another person taking their own life", said Cleveland Police Chief Calvin Williams.

Philadelphia Police paid tribute to a Cleveland native who was randomly shot and killed by a man who posted the murder on Facebook.

The daughter of a retiree slain in an apparently random Cleveland shooting that was recorded and shared on Facebook says she's sad that the suspect killed himself in Pennsylvania. The FBI is assisting with a manhunt.

The drive-thru attendant thought she recognized Stephens and called state police, restaurant owner Thomas DuCharme Jr. told the Erie Times-News.

The break in the case came when police received a tip that Stephens was at the McDonald's in Erie, in far western Pennsylvania about 100 miles east of Cleveland, where he ordered a 20-piece Chicken McNuggets and fries. "I snapped. Dog, I just snapped, dog". He encounters Godwin in the first and shoots him the second.

Police warned Stephens's death might make it harder to prevent similar crimes. He had worked for many years at a children's behavioral center in OH, where he had no red flags in his personnel file, according to the Erie Times-News.

Police would not speculate on what triggered the killing, but in the video and other footage he posted, Stephens talked about having trouble with his girlfriend and losing everything he had to gambling.

In interviews, some of Godwin's relatives forgave his killer. "I don't think there's anything we can point to specifically to say that this is what sparked this".

Stephens is believed to have videotaped his actions and published it on Facebook, along with another video threatening to kill others and claiming he had already killed 13 people. "Only Steve knows that". Police in Philadelphia said eight elementary schools and a high school were locked down Monday while they investigated reported sightings but found nothing. "I am sorry that all of this has happened".
