United Airlines not to fire employees who dragged passenger

Blumental recently penned a letter to US Transportation Secretary Elaine Chao - whose department is reportedly reviewing the United Airlines incident - outlining his concerns with the treatment of passengers by US airlines.

United Airlines chief executive Oscar Munoz.

He says the airline will have more to say later this month after it finishes a review of its policies on overbooked flights.

Announcements, if they are made at all, will regularly give the wrong platform for a departing train so that passengers will scramble back and forth from one side of the station to the next in the hope of being at the right place at the right time.

Munoz and other executives vowed to treat customers with dignity, and said that what happened to Dao will never happen again.

Munoz and his top lieutenants indicated that it was too early to tell if bookings had been affected by the incident. He initially supported employees and blamed Dao, calling him "disruptive and belligerent". "There was never a consideration for firing an employee".

The CEO took personal responsibility for the incident, which drew widespread condemnation, and said no employees would be fired as a result of it. Munoz confirmed that he would remain in his position amid public calls for his resignation.

Shares in United's owner, United Continental Holdings Inc, were hammered, dropping 4 percent last week to close at $69 on Thursday, reducing the company's market cap by $770 million to $21.5 billion.

"It was a system failure across various areas", Mr Munoz continued.

Mr Dao's lawyers have taken steps ahead of impending legal action against the airline and the city of Chicago, which operates O'Hare Airport.

United announced late last week that it would stop the practice of involuntarily removing passengers from planes once they'd boarded, as was the case on Flight 3411. This comes after a P.R. disaster in which a passenger was dragged off an April 9th flight in Chicago so extra crew members would have seats.

Some politicians and consumer advocates have called for a ban on overselling flights.

Munoz declined to comment on any other policy changes coming to United Airlines, according to The Tribune.

The couple "repeatedly attempted to sit in upgraded seating which they did not purchase and they would not follow crew instructions to return to their assigned seats", United said in a statement, adding "They were asked to leave the plane by our staff and complied".

"Our forecast for the quarter didn't change at all", president Scott Kirby said during United's first-quarter earnings call Tuesday morning.
