Rep. Jason Chaffetz, R-Utah, shook the political world Wednesday by announcing that he will not seek his re-election to Congress in 2018, 10 years after he first ran for the House.

'My future plans are not yet finalized but I haven't ruled out the possibility of leaving early, ' he told numerous news outlets.

During his chairmanship, Chaffetz investigated former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton for her use of a private email account and server while conducting State Department business. Chaffetz says he won't for re-election or any other offi.

He has faced pressure from protesters in his home district and federal watchdogs for not pursuing investigations into the Trump administration more forcefully. Speculation, on Wednesday, ran the gamut from a burgeoning ethics investigation that might have landed Chaffetz in the Congressional doghouse, to a possible run for governor. Political unknown Dr. Kathryn Allen has been transformed into a liberal hero for calling out Chaffetz on Twitter, gaining an early boost in name recognition.

Update: Amber Philips at the Washington Post suggests that Chaffetz may be bowing out in 2018 in order to run for governor in 2020.

House Speaker Paul Ryan tweeted that Chaffetz is "a great defender of liberty and limited government" and wished him the best.

Yes, but more than 80% of her larger donations came from outside of Utah, too.

It will be up to Gov. Gary Herbert to call a special election for Chaffetz's seat if he leaves before his current term ends at the beginning of 2019, but there is no process in place in state law. He said he made the decision after consulting his "family and prayerful consideration". Rep. Kristi Noem of South Dakota is running for governor, and Reps.
