WALLINGFORD A Chesire man died as a result of a plane crash Monday evening, police said at a late-night press conference at the Wallingford Police Department, and his son, was injured.

The aircraft appeared to be attempting to land when it crashed through a chain link fence, crossed a road, and struck a berm, police said. Authorities haven't said who was piloting the plane at the time of the crash, according to NBC.

The National Transportation Safety Board says the Cirrus SR22 was on its second set of landings and takeoffs, when it assumed a landing attitude about 10 or 15 feet above the runway.

Joseph Tomanelli, 56, of Cheshire, was killed.

CT reports the father and son were attempting to land a Cirrus SR22 plane. Meriden resident Dan Mercurio was on the scene in Wallingford when he saw several Good Samaritans run toward the wreckage, ABC New Haven affiliate WTNH reported.

He joined Hartford HealthCare Medical Group in 2012, working at a primary care practice on 67 Masonic Ave.in Wallingford.

'Dr. Tomanelli was a well-known and esteemed primary care physician in our community for years and will be tremendously missed, ' Hartford HealthCare said in a statement. "Our thoughts and prayers are with all who knew him". His postdoctoral training was at Francis Scott Key Medical Center in Baltimore.

"Ok plane crash, its on the Wallingford side?" the dispatcher responded.

On Oct. 6 in Plymouth, the pilot of a small, open-cockpit plane suffered serious injuries after crashing not far from a small airport.
