Would Trump request to end Flynn probe have broken law?

  • Donald Trump, on Feb 28 2017 White House National Security Advisor Michael Flynn

According to a set of notes written by Comey following a February meeting with the president, Trump brought up the counterintelligence investigation into Flynn and urged Comey to drop the probe in the wake of the national security adviser's resignation.

A letter seeking Comey's memos was sent to the Federal Bureau of Investigation headquarters by the Oversight Committee following the report that Trump told Comey "I hope you can let this go", after intelligence regarding Flynn's collusion with the Russians surfaced, as reported by the New York Times.

While many congressional Democrats are calling for an independent investigation into the Comey allegations and reports that Trump gave away classified information to the Russians, Mast and other Republicans have been more cautious in their public pronouncements.

Democratic Senator Mark Warren told U.S. media he believed "the American people will get a chance to hear from Comey shortly".

Putin also refrained from assessing Trump's performance as president, stressing that such assessments should be given by the American people and its constituency.

"This is not a truthful or accurate portrayal of the conversation between the president and Mr. Comey", the statement said.

Earlier this week, it was also alleged that Trump disclosed classified information on national security during a meeting with Russia's foreign minister and ambassador to the United States.

Following Tuesday's reports on the Comey memo, pundits and politicians alike have suggested that Trump's conduct could constitute an obstruction of justice-an impeachable offense.

Green, who represents Houston, is the first member of Congress to formally call for an impeachment, but Maxine Waters (D-CA) was the first representative to say that Trump should be impeached via Twitter back in March.

Mr Trump himself said he had "an absolute right" as president to share "facts pertaining to terrorism" and airline safety with Russian Federation.

Soon thereafter another Republican lawmaker was seen supporting the impeachment move. "I support the House and Senate Committees' work on the issue and encourage them to both get all the facts and to complete their work in a thorough and timely manner".
