  • Representative: Rocker Chris Cornell Has Died At Age 52

The cause of renowned grunge rock singer Chris Cornell's death was suicide, per the medical examiner.

A MI medical examiner made the ruling on Thursday (May 18), hours after the 52-year-old Soundgarden singer was found dead in a Detroit hotel room on Wednesday night (May 17). Cornell was found with "a band around his neck" in the MGM Grand Hotel.

"It's really sad that he could never find peace in his life", said Chad White, who came to the art display with his young son Ignatius to honor Cornell.

With his powerful, almost four-octave vocal range, Cornell was one of the leading voices of the 1990s grunge movement with Soundgarden, which emerged as one of the biggest bands out of Seattle's emerging music scene, joining the likes of Nirvana, Pearl Jam and Alice in Chains.

Along with the towering tribute, local radio station KEXP held a gathering of hundreds at the local Seattle Centre, holding a moment's silence for the iconic vocalist who helped to put the city and its music on the map.

"Chris Cornell died today", Mustaine told the audience.

"His wife Vicky and family were shocked to learn of his sudden and unexpected passing, and they will be working closely with the medical examiner to determine the cause", Brian Bumbery, Cornell's representative, says in a statement.

Recognising the unusual feeling that comes with grieving a person we loved despite never having met, he urged that we should all have a "green light to grieve those we don't know personally, as well". "But it's a devastating loss". Two members of Mother Love Bone went on to form Pearl Jam and they joined Cornell on a tribute project to Wood - Temple of the Dog - which helped introduce Pearl Jam singer Eddie Vedder to the world.

After the band broke up in 1997, Cornell pursued a solo career - though only for a few years.

Cornell had been touring with Soundgarden at the time of his death.
