A full autopsy report was not yet completed Thursday afternoon, but a medical examiner confirmed the suicide.

Rocker Chris Cornell, who gained fame as the lead singer of Soundgarden and later Audioslave, has died at age 52 after taking his own life.

"There is no additional information at this time", the Wayne County office added. Said family friend called 911, but Cornell was pronounced dead shortly after they arrived. He went to the hotel and discovered him unresponsive on the bathroom floor.

Dave Mustaine and his bandmates halted their show in Tokyo to salute the rocker, who hanged himself in a Detroit, Michigan hotel room.

He had spoken openly in interviews of his struggles with drugs as a teenager, and later with alcohol. A statement has been given to the Associated Press by his representative, Brian Bumbery, in which he has stated that Cornell died on Wednesday night in Detroit.

Megadeth paid a special tribute to Chris Cornell during a gig in Japan on Thursday night, hours after learning the Soundgarden singer had died.

Soundgarden, Pearl Jam, Alice in Chains and Mudhoney were among the most high-profile bands to come out of Seattle and dominated the pop culture landscape of the early and mid-1990s.

Cornell also sang the theme song to the James Bond movie "Casino Royale".

In 2001, Cornell joined Audioslave, a supergroup that included former Rage Against the Machine members Tom Morello, Brad Wilk and Tim Commerford.

His decades-long career as a solo artist as well as leader singer and guitarist for both Soundgarden and Audioslave means he leaves behind a massive body of work.

The concert, which took place at the Jose Marti Anti-Imperialist Tribune in front of what was then the U.S. Interests Section in Havana (the U.S. Embassy opened in 2015), was the first major outdoor concert by an American rock band in Cuba.

Elton John: "Shocked and saddened by the sudden death of Chris Cornell".

He reunited with Soundgarden in 2010 and they released a sixth studio album, King Animal, two years later.

His first solo album, 1999's "Euphoria Morning", was a dark album that was initially supposed to be titled "Euphoria Mourning". Their most successful single, "Like a Stone", released in 2003.
