  • Global cyberattack A simple explanation

He highlighted that the government had invested £50 million in supporting NHS IT networks during its last strategic defense and security review, and insisted that individual trusts were well-equipped to ensure they could protect themselves against cyber-attack.

People seeking medical treatment were still being redirected from two hospitals in Hertfordshire and Essex yesterday after the ransomware virus - which affected 150 countries - brought IT services to a halt.

Scottish targets included 11 health boards, NHS National Services and the Scottish Ambulance Service.

Some routine surgery and GP appointments were also cancelled across the NHS in the aftermath.

"If people have hospital or GP appointments they should attend unless told otherwise".

'Our Data Security Centre continues to work around the clock alongside the National Cyber Security Centre, to support NHS organisations that have reported any issues related to this cyber-attack'.

Dr Anne Rainsberry, the national incident director, said: "There are encouraging signs that the situation is improving, with fewer hospitals having to divert patients from their A&E units".

"The message to patients is clear: the NHS is open for business".

"While there is still some disruption in a small number of areas, most patients are being treated as normal", she added.

The West Herts Hospitals NHS Trust - which runs hospitals in Watford, St Albans and Hemel Hempstead - also experienced IT failures last week.

NHS Digital has announced updated guidelines on protecting against future cyber-attacks including instructions to install a patch to protect systems against further attacks and malicious viruses.

GP practices will be working to get back to full operational capacity and concentrating on prioritising patients with the greatest needs.

But on Tuesday afternoon the trust confirmed the services would return to normal tomorrow morning.
