FedEx hit by 'WannaCry' ransomware

The agency and its partners in the global security community are now in a "sort of cat-and-mouse" competition with hackers, as variants of the software that foil previous solutions emerge, the official says. The hack used a technique purportedly stolen from the US National Security Agency to target Microsoft's market-leading Windows operating system.

Then there's the US government, whose Windows hacking tools were leaked to the internet and got into the hands of cybercriminals.

Some major technology companies, including Alphabet Inc's Google and Facebook Inc, declined comment on the Microsoft statement. The software responsible is called WannaCry (also known as Wanna Decryptor) and it takes over your computer until a ransom is paid, CNN reported. You can find the patch here.

Here are some of the key players in the attack and what may - or may not - be their fault.

The ransomware encrypts data on the computer using an encryption key that only the attacker knows.

Furthermore, Smith emphasized that governments' stockpiling of vulnerabilities is a problem. Why are security professionals forced to beat back NSA-made cyber-weapons today?

Blaming the ransomware attack on stockpiling of vulnerabilities by governments, Microsoft said, "vulnerabilities stored by the Central Intelligence Agency show up on WikiLeaks, and now this vulnerability stolen from the NSA has affected customers around the world. They must also enable automatic updates in their computer or laptop systems", added Yadav. Microsoft did issue patches for the vulnerabilities before the attacks took place, but not everyone downloaded them.

Even if not affected by WannaCry, pro-actively consider cybersecurity compliance - e.g., under long standing privacy or security laws for your sector, the EU's General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), Cyber Security Directive and Second Payment Services Directive, UK Financial Conduct Authority Rules, or existing and emerging US State laws, such as the New York Department of Financial Service's Cybersecurity Regulations.

"If your software is not patched, you can exploit that user". The ransomware exploits a vulnerability in Microsoft Windows XP, which the company had stopped actively supporting in 2014.

FedEx: The company said this weekend it was "experiencing interference with some of our Windows-based systems caused by malware" and was trying to fix the problems as quickly as possible.

Previous attacks targeted individuals and a few businesses, while this one is a widespread ransomware attack that has hit businesses globally. He noted, however, the complexity that can be involved in patching a security hole.

Bkav recommends that all computer users immediately install updates and security patches and hotfixes via Windows Update.

Prevention is the best way to avoid becoming a ransomware victim.

Keep all the software on your computer up-to-date. There are also many third-party products that can help backup your system.

"It's not rocket science", Litan said. Asked what the company is doing to prevent such exploitations, he cited "basic IT security blocking and tackling".

"The malware enters the system through phishing emails or when the user clicks on unknown links".

With about 70 per cent of India's ATMs running on Windows XP, the operating system most affected by Wannacry ransomware, software and security experts have pointed out that governments and organisations need to regularly update the software involved in running key financial and infrastructure systems in the country.

WannaCry developers have prepared a Q&A section in various languages, offering infected users localised instructions on how to recover data and how to pay the ransom.
