Ailes' wife said in a statement she's "profoundly sad and heartbroken at her husband's passing". She described her husband as a "patriot", a "loving husband" and a "loyal friend".

Gabriel Sherman, a reporter who wrote a biography of Ailes, said on Twitter that Ailes died after suffering a blood clot after falling in Palm Beach, Florida, citing two family friends.

A caller contacted 911 dispatchers on May 10, saying Ailes had fallen in his bathroom, hit his head and was bleeding profusely. At 21st Century Fox we will always be enormously grateful for the great business he built.

"Roger played a huge role in shaping America's media over the last 30 years", said the 86-year-old in a statement.

"Roger was a great patriot who never ceased fighting for his beliefs", he added.

"No one deserves more credit for the rightward movement of this country over the last 20 years or so than Roger Ailes", said Bruce Bartlett, a former aide to Presidents Ronald Reagan and George H.W. Bush who now considers himself an independent.

Earhardt, a Spring Valley High and University of SC graduate, appeared near tears as she and fellow "Fox & Friends" anchors shared the news, according to multiple media reports.

But there was a darker side to Ailes' conservatism and that played out very publicly previous year when former Fox host Gretchen Carlson launched an explosive multi-million-dollar lawsuit against him, citing sexual harassment.

Hosts Bret Baier, Bill Hemmer, and Sean Hannity quickly praised Ailes, and Ainsley Earhardt choked up on "Fox & Friends" while announcing Ailes' death.

By 1992, Ailes had retired from politics and soured on the news media.

Ailes went into politics after meeting President Richard Nixon, who made an appearance on The Mike Douglas Show in 1967, according to Fox News.

"On a personal note, were it not for Roger Ailes, I would not be the person I am today".

In 1996, Ailes helped launch Fox News, which dramatically changed the media landscape. Ailes reportedly helped coach the now president for last year's election campaign debates.

Neither his wife nor Fox released any details on the circumstances of Ailes' death. It has become synonymous with the American Christian right and Ailes himself became a critical presence in the USA conservative political.
