  • Google makes Kotlin a first-class language for writing Android apps

The language will continue to be developed and supported by JetBrains.

Additionally, Studio 3.0 now has the ability to "debug an arbitrary APK", something which Google states would be "especially helpful for those who develop [their] Android C++ code in another development environment, but want to debug and analyze the APK in the context of Android Studio".

Google has announced that it is adding Kotlin as a first class language for writing Android apps. Among reasons for choosing Kotlin, Google mentioned it being "concise, expressive, and created to be type- and null-safe" and also "many Android developers have already found that Kotlin makes development faster and more fun". For those unaware, Kotlin has been regarded as a programming language that's easier to use than others because of how the syntax is setup. While these are the three standout features, the new Canary build of Android Studio does in fact come with some more changes that developers can take advantage of. A few more months will be needed until it is ready for prime time.

The open source, statically typed Kotlin was built to run on the Java Virtual Machine, and has accommodations for JavaScript compilation.

The interested people can go ahead and download Android Studio preview and try out options like "Convert Java File to Kotlin File".

Today, at the Google I/O keynote, the Android team announced first-class support for Kotlin. They depend on how the language evolves. Kotlin's primary sponsor is JetBrains, the company behind tools like IntelliJ. This move is also an indication that Google might get involved in pushing Kotlin forward, which is good news for the language.
