Google may preview stand alone virtual reality headset at developer conference

Google made a decision to partner with HTC and Lenovo to create a new Vive standalone VR headset that will be the first to use Google's Daydream platform. The hardware is fully optimized for VR, and features a new headset tracking technology called WorldSense. Google introduced the new VR device at Google I/O, which had been rumored, saying HTC and Lenovo, which Google worked with on Tango, will be the first two manufacturers showing the new tech.

Current VR headsets, including Facebook Inc.'s Oculus Rift and Google's own Daydream system, require a PC or phone.

Members of Google's Daydream team shared these updates at the company's Google I/O developer conference in Mountain, where the company announced on Wednesday that it is working with HTC and Lenovo on standalone Daydream VR headsets. This lets Google and hardware makers customize the displays, optics, and sensors to be ideal for virtual reality, he said.

Standalone headsets will not require a connection to a phone or PC to access VR content.

Cables, for example, are restrictive and frustrating to deal with when you're immersed in a virtual world and trying to move around while wearing a headset.

These headsets come with new WorldSense positional tracking, which basically lets the headset track your movements in space - without the need to install any external sensors.

Google's using what it's learned from its Daydream VR effort to build standalone headsets.

We look forward to seeing if this new headset can provide a reasonable alternative as more information about the Vive becomes available.

However, in addition to the Snapdragon 835 processor, it appears that the V30 will also be capable of supporting or meeting the requirements to support Google's Daydream VR platform. A report published by Backchannel says the devices should be here later this year, which matches what we were told on stage.
