  • “The cabinet has approved to install 10 indigenously built PWHRs,” Union Minister Piyush Goyal said at a press conference

India approved the construction of ten 700 MWe units in a "significant decision to fast-track India's domestic nuclear power program". The new reactors will generate 700 MW power each.

India has 6780 MWe of installed nuclear capacity from 22 operational reactors with another 6700 MWe expected to come on stream over the next five years, the cabinet noted.

These 10 atomic reactors, when completed, will add 7000MW of nuclear power capacity and generate manufacturing orders worth Rs 70,000 crore for the domestic industry while providing direct and indirect jobs to over 33,400 people.

The decision was taken at the meeting of Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) headed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

It also supports India's commitment to sustainable development, energy self-sufficiency and bolsters global efforts to combat climate change, he said. But the China putting spokes at India's membership to NSG, which would have assured an uninterrupted nuclear fuel supply has been delaying setting up these reactors.

He said it would be one of the flagship "Make in India" projects in the nuclear power sector.

India is the world's third largest electricity producer and fourth largest consumer, with an installed capacity of 329 gigawatts.

As of now, India gets a major share of its power through thermal energy, nuclear power comprising only 2 percent of the country's total power requirement.

The project to expedite generation of nuclear power domestically by the government also comes in the wake of Japan-based nuclear power company, Westinghouse's bankruptcy.

The country's nuclear power sector is set to undergo the biggest expansion in its history with the cabinet clearing 10 reactors on Wednesday.

The prime minister's office said that the approval marks a statement of strong belief in the capability of India's scientific community to build its technological capacities.

The ten reactors are said to be part of India's latest design of 700MW PHWR fleet with an advanced technology.
